Wow, his English sounds so perfect. Hard to believe that he really taught himself without having any formal instruction. Certainly, Bill seems communicate well through his self-learned language. Am I jumping to a conclusion if I say that he is a sucessful language learner just like Wes?
Thanks, Ky.

Just bear in mind that English is not spoken very much in Vietnam, and his only "real" environment is the movies

No sweat, huh? :)

Wow, wow, wow, he relly taught himself??? He is a successful learner just like Wes. It is interesting to see how he uses slungs. I can see he learned his "real" language from the movies.

That's incredible!
It reminded me of a college age man (briefly a student) I met in Japan who spoke perfect English with an American accent. Not a hint of any other accent. I asked him where he learned English. He had been an exchange student in New Zealand and stayed for his 3 years of high school (explaining his high ability). I asked why he sounded perfectly American rather than Kiwi. He told me he didn't like the Kiwi accent so he watched American movies to learn the accent he wanted.
Good stuff Ky.

yeah, i imitated mine from the bbc...good stuff there too (sometimes you can hear the bbc (reporters) on npr too!)...and also the americanisms from watching movies...but i didn't pick up too much of the latter since i'm not a movie buff.

i picked up more slang from interacting with other native speakers...the stiff (read "proper") english i had came from my education, can't say i regret/berate it...
